Plumbing & Water Heating

What is Backflow Preventer?

A backflow preventer is a plumbing assembly that stops contaminated water from flowing backward into the drinking water supply when pressure drops or reverses. Common types include double-check valve assemblies, reduced pressure zone (RPZ) assemblies, pressure vacuum breakers, and hose-bib vacuum breakers, often required on irrigation systems, boilers, and other cross-connections.

Why it matters to you

Lawn irrigation is common across Lowcountry neighborhoods, and an irrigation line is exactly the kind of cross-connection that can pull fertilizer- or pesticide-tainted water back toward your household supply.

Practical guidance

Find out whether your irrigation system or other equipment has a testable backflow assembly and whether your water provider requires periodic testing by a certified tester. Leaking or dripping assemblies should be repaired promptly, not bypassed.
