What does HVAC stand for?
HVAC stands for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. It is the system that provides heating and cooling to residential and commercial buildings, and its job is to deliver thermal comfort, humidity control, and acceptable indoor air quality.
What is a BTU?
BTU stands for British Thermal Unit, a unit of measure used to rate heating and cooling capacity. One BTU is the amount of heat required to raise or lower the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. There are 12,000 BTUs in one ton of cooling.
What is SEER2?
SEER2 is the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2, the current standard for measuring the cooling efficiency of air conditioners and heat pumps. It is calculated from the cooling output over a typical cooling season divided by the total electric energy used during the same period, using updated test conditions that better reflect real-world installations. A higher SEER2 rating means greater energy efficiency. Older equipment is rated on the original SEER scale, which works the same way but uses slightly different test conditions.
What is a MERV rating?
MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, a filter rating system created by ASHRAE so consumers can easily compare one filter's performance to another. The higher the MERV rating, the more particles such as dust mites, pet dander, and airborne allergens the filter removes from the air. Screening out more particles does make your system work a bit harder, so the rating should be matched to both your needs and your equipment. If allergies or asthma are a concern, a MERV 8 filter or higher is a good starting point.
What is an air handler?
An air handler is usually a large metal cabinet containing a blower, heating or cooling elements, filter racks, and dampers. It typically connects to ductwork that distributes conditioned air through the building and returns it to the unit. With a ductless mini split, the air handler may not require ducts at all, which is where the name ductless comes from.

What is an AFUE rating on a furnace?
Furnaces are rated by Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, or AFUE, which measures how efficiently a furnace converts fuel into heat and is expressed as a percentage. Like the miles-per-gallon rating on a car, the higher the AFUE, the lower your fuel costs. An AFUE of 90 percent means 90 percent of the energy in the fuel becomes heat for your home while the rest escapes up the chimney and elsewhere. AFUE does not account for duct losses, which can be significant when ducts run through an attic or garage, so it is just one factor to weigh when choosing a new furnace.
What is two-stage heating?
Two-stage heating means the furnace has two levels of heat output, high for cold winter days and low for milder days. Since the low setting is adequate to meet household heating demands most of the time, a two-stage unit runs for longer periods and provides more even heat distribution.
Will a new furnace work differently than my old one?
Yes, furnace technology has advanced significantly, and modern furnaces are designed to heat more evenly and efficiently, which changes how the system operates and sounds. New furnaces move more air over the heat exchanger, so the air from your registers may not feel as warm as it did from your old furnace even though overall airflow and comfort are improved. Blowers are also more powerful so they can integrate with high-efficiency air conditioning, and in older homes with ducts originally designed for heating only, this can produce unfamiliar sounds. Choosing a variable speed model helps minimize sound levels by automatically adjusting airflow for heating and cooling cycles.
What is a heat pump?
A heat pump is an all-in-one heating and cooling system that works year-round. During warmer months it operates like a normal air conditioner, extracting heat from inside the home and transferring it to the outdoor air. In colder weather the process reverses, and the unit collects heat from the outdoor air and sends it inside to warm your home. When there is not enough heat in the outside air to meet the thermostat setting, supplemental electric heat makes up the difference. The process is highly efficient, typically producing two to three times more heat than the energy it uses.
Cooling & Ductless Systems
How does a central air conditioner work?
Most home and light commercial systems circulate a compressed refrigerant through a closed split system to cool and dehumidify indoor air. Split simply means the components are divided into indoor and outdoor sections rather than housed together in a package unit. An indoor blower circulates the conditioned air through ducts to the rooms that need it, while an outdoor fan pulls air across the exterior components to cool and condense the refrigerant so the cycle can repeat.
How does a ductless mini split system work?
A ductless mini split pairs an outdoor condensing unit with one or more indoor air handlers, connected by a small conduit that carries the refrigerant lines, power wiring, and a condensate drain. Indoor units can be wall-mounted, ceiling-mounted, recessed, or floor-mounted, and a system can serve a single room or multiple rooms. Because each indoor unit is controlled individually, you set the temperature for each room instead of using one thermostat for the whole house, so you only condition the spaces you are using. That room-by-room control is true zoning, and a ductless system can replace a traditional ducted system or work alongside one.
Can I install a ductless mini split myself?
Installing a ductless mini split is more complicated than a window unit but less involved than installing a central system, and that can be misleading. Ductless systems are sensitive pieces of equipment and are quite unforgiving when mistakes are made, so small errors lead to big problems. Homeowner installations and work by unlicensed individuals will most often void the manufacturer warranty on your new equipment. A licensed, factory-trained installer will pressure test, evacuate, and charge the system correctly, then complete startup and commissioning so it performs as designed.
How noisy is a ductless mini split?
In general, the sound generated by a ductless indoor air handler is equivalent to whispering in a library, between 21 and 30 decibels. The outdoor unit is closer to normal conversation at around 60 decibels, which is still quieter than a conventional air conditioning condenser.
Air Quality & Filters
What is indoor air quality?
Indoor air quality, or IAQ, refers to the air quality within and around buildings, especially as it relates to the health and comfort of the people inside. We spend most of our time indoors, so breathing healthy air where we live, work, and play is critical. Indoor air pollution can have the same negative effects as outdoor environmental pollution.
What is the difference between UV air purifiers and air filtration?
Both are effective at removing harmful elements from the air, but they target different things. UV air purifiers focus on neutralizing airborne germs, bacteria, and mold, while filtration focuses on capturing harmful particulates that become airborne. When a UV light system is properly installed inside your HVAC equipment, there is no direct or harmful exposure to you or your family.
Can I use a high-efficiency filter in any furnace?
Filter efficiency refers to the percentage of airborne particles a filter removes, which is separate from the fuel efficiency of the furnace itself. You can generally pair a high-efficiency filter with a standard furnace, but too high an efficiency in some models creates excess static pressure on the blower motor and can cause premature motor failure. Check your furnace documentation or ask a technician which filter efficiency your system is designed to handle. Note that ductless system filters are original equipment manufacturer parts and are not available generically.
Repairs & Replacement
What is the average life of an HVAC system?
Most systems have a lifetime of 10 to 15 years, with gas furnaces often lasting 20 to 25 years. As equipment ages its efficiency can decrease dramatically, and you may notice it gets noisier and needs repairs more often. If you live near bodies of water or the ocean, the harsh environment can drastically shorten a system's life expectancy. If your system is over 10 years old, it is worth having it evaluated for maintenance or replacement.
What is the 50 percent rule for HVAC repairs?
The 50 percent rule is a quick way to weigh a major repair against replacement. If the cost of the repair is less than half of the system's value and you have not been carrying the financial burden of frequent service calls to keep it running, repair is often the more economical choice. Keep in mind that replacing parts of an old system does not improve its underlying efficiency, so ask your technician to calculate your system's efficiency and energy usage to help make the determination.
Why does my circuit breaker trip when my AC runs?
Fuses and circuit breakers should not blow or trip during normal operation. Check whether the breaker feels warm to the touch, but never touch wires or wire connections inside the service panel because high voltage is present. A breaker that is warm or hot can indicate a weak breaker that a licensed electrician should evaluate. If the breaker feels normal you can try resetting it, but if it trips again the cause could be a loose electrical wire, a short to ground, or a failed compressor, and a licensed HVAC contractor should diagnose the problem safely.
Why do my lights blink when the air conditioner starts?
This is a common occurrence when a large motor or compressor load starts up. The startup causes a minor momentary voltage drop, which shows up as blinking lights. It has no negative effect on the electrical equipment in your house.

What does a thermostat actually do?
A thermostat is a temperature-sensitive device that controls and regulates the temperature in a space for systems such as a furnace, an air conditioner, or both. When the indoor temperature drops below or rises above the setting, the thermostat starts or stops the heating or cooling mode based on the set point. Your equipment then runs until the air reaches the temperature you selected.
What types of thermostats are available?
Common options range from simple manual and digital non-programmable models to programmable, touchscreen, wireless Wi-Fi, and smart thermostats with remote access. Thermostats matter more than most people realize, since they control roughly half of a home's energy use, which is more than appliances, computers, and lighting combined. A technician can help match the right model to your system and your habits.
