Heating & Heat Pumps

What is Heat Exchanger?

A heat exchanger is the sealed metal chamber in a gas furnace that transfers heat from burning fuel to the household air blown across it, while keeping combustion gases separate and directing them out the vent. Condensing furnaces add a secondary heat exchanger that captures additional heat from exhaust. A cracked heat exchanger can leak carbon monoxide.

Why it matters to you

Many Lowcountry furnaces sit idle most of the year in humid attics, garages, and crawlspaces, where moisture and corrosion can take a toll. An annual safety inspection before the first cold snap is the time to catch a compromised heat exchanger.

Practical guidance

Install working carbon monoxide alarms on every level of a home with gas appliances. If an alarm sounds or you suspect a gas or exhaust problem, leave the house and call for help; a heat exchanger inspection is a job for a licensed technician.
