What a frozen coil actually is
Inside your air handler sits the evaporator coil, a network of cold refrigerant tubing that indoor air passes over. As warm, humid air moves across the coil, the refrigerant absorbs heat and the moisture in the air condenses on the coil surface, then drips into a drain pan. That is normal operation, and it is why your AC also works as a dehumidifier.
When something upsets that balance, the coil surface can drop below freezing. Instead of condensing and draining away, the moisture freezes in place. Ice builds in layers, which insulates the coil and blocks airflow even further, so the problem feeds on itself. Left running, a frozen system can go from a thin frost to a solid block of ice in a matter of hours.
Charleston makes this worse than it would be in a dry climate. Our summer air carries an enormous amount of moisture, so once a coil starts icing there is a constant supply of humidity to keep the ice growing. A system that might limp along in Arizona can lock up quickly in the Lowcountry.
Cause one: restricted airflow
The most common reason a coil freezes is that not enough warm air is moving across it. The refrigerant keeps absorbing heat, but there is no heat arriving to absorb, so the coil temperature falls below freezing. Anything that chokes airflow can trigger this.
A clogged air filter is the usual suspect, and it is the one thing you can check and fix yourself. Beyond the filter, closed or blocked supply vents, crushed or disconnected ductwork, a dirty blower wheel, a failing blower motor, or a coil matted with dust can all starve the system of airflow.
If you find ice, turn the cooling off at the thermostat but leave the fan set to on. Moving air melts the ice faster and helps protect the compressor. Replace the filter if it is dirty, open every supply vent, and give the coil several hours to thaw completely before running the AC again.

- Open all supply vents, even in unused rooms
- Make sure return grilles are not blocked by furniture or rugs
- Listen for a blower that sounds weak or strained
- Look for visible ice on the copper lines at the outdoor unit
Cause two: low refrigerant
Refrigerant pressure and temperature are directly linked. When a system loses refrigerant through a leak, the pressure inside the evaporator coil drops, and lower pressure means a colder coil. Once the coil surface falls below freezing, ice forms even if airflow is perfectly fine.
Refrigerant does not get used up like fuel. If the level is low, the system has a leak, and simply adding more refrigerant without finding the leak is a temporary patch that costs you again later. A proper repair means locating the leak, fixing it, verifying the repair holds pressure, and then charging the system to the manufacturer's specification.
Along the coast, corrosion is a common source of small refrigerant leaks. Salt-laden air slowly eats at coil fins and tubing, and tiny pinhole leaks can develop over years. If your system is icing up and the filter is clean, a leak check is the logical next step, and it is not a do-it-yourself job since handling refrigerant requires certification.
Other causes worth ruling out
A thermostat set extremely low, especially overnight when outdoor temperatures drop, can push a system into freezing territory. Running the AC when it is cool outside also lowers coil pressure. If you like the house very cold, be aware that asking for it during mild weather increases the risk of icing.
A failed or failing blower capacitor, a slipping blower belt on older equipment, or a zoning damper stuck closed can each reduce airflow enough to freeze a coil without any obvious warning. A clogged condensate drain can also let water pool and refreeze near the coil in some configurations.
Because several of these causes look identical from the outside, a system that freezes more than once deserves a diagnostic visit. A technician will measure airflow, check refrigerant pressures, inspect the coil, and pinpoint the actual cause rather than guessing.
How to prevent it in Charleston's climate
Most freeze-ups are preventable with basic upkeep. Change your filter on schedule, more often during peak summer when the system runs long hours, and keep vents and returns clear. If your home tends to be dusty or you have shedding pets, check the filter monthly.
Annual professional maintenance catches the slower-moving causes, including a dirty evaporator coil, weak blower performance, and early signs of refrigerant loss, before they turn into a July breakdown.
