Heating & Heat Pumps

What is Dual-Fuel System?

A dual-fuel system pairs an electric heat pump with a gas furnace in one ducted system. The heat pump handles cooling and most heating, and a controller switches to the gas furnace when outdoor temperatures drop below a set balance point, using whichever fuel is more efficient or economical for the conditions at the time.

Why it matters to you

For Lowcountry homes that already have gas service, dual fuel keeps heat pump efficiency for the mild majority of winter while gas covers the few genuinely cold snaps. Berkeley Electric Cooperative offers rebates for qualifying dual-fuel installations.

Practical guidance

Dual fuel fits best when a working gas line and venting are already in place. Have the switchover temperature set during commissioning based on your equipment and utility rates rather than a factory default.
