Heating & Heat Pumps

What is Heat Pump?

A heat pump is an electric heating and cooling system that moves heat rather than generating it. In summer it works like an air conditioner, carrying indoor heat outside; in winter a reversing valve flips the refrigerant flow to pull heat from outdoor air and release it indoors, delivering more heat energy than the electricity it uses.

Why it matters to you

Charleston's mild winters keep heat pumps in their most efficient operating range for most of the heating season, and the long cooling season means the same machine earns its keep as a high-efficiency air conditioner most of the year.

Practical guidance

When replacing a central AC or electric strip heat, price a heat pump alongside the like-for-like option. Expect gentler, steadier supply air than a gas furnace, and plan on supplemental heat strips or a dual-fuel setup for the rare hard freeze.

Is a heat pump a good choice for a Charleston home?

For most Lowcountry homes, yes. Our winters sit mostly in the mild range where heat pumps heat most efficiently, and hard freezes are brief. One system covers heating and cooling, so the investment goes toward the season you actually live in.

Is a heat pump cheaper to run than electric strip heat?

Yes, by design. Electric resistance strips turn one unit of electricity into one unit of heat, while a heat pump moves heat and delivers more heat energy than the electricity it consumes. Homes heated mainly by older strip-heat air handlers usually see the biggest operating difference.

Are there rebates for heat pumps in the Charleston area?

Heat pumps have the most rebate support of any HVAC purchase in this market: Dominion Energy South Carolina, Santee Cooper, and Berkeley Electric Cooperative each run heat pump or dual-fuel incentives, and South Carolina's HEAR rebates for heat pumps are expected during 2026. The federal 25C tax credit ended for installations completed after December 31, 2025, so check current utility terms before you buy.

Can I finance a heat pump installation?

Yes. Holy City Heating & Air offers financing through Goodleap, which can spread the cost of a new system into monthly payments. Many homeowners pair financing with any utility rebate their equipment qualifies for.

Will a heat pump keep my house warm during a freeze?

Yes. Modern heat pumps keep producing heat well below freezing, and ducted systems here usually include supplemental heat strips that engage automatically on the coldest nights. In Charleston those strips run only a small number of hours each year.
