What is Refrigerant Leak?

A refrigerant leak is a loss of refrigerant from the sealed circuit of an air conditioner or heat pump, usually through corroded coils, worn joints, vibration-cracked tubing, or faulty valves. Refrigerant is not consumed in normal operation, so a low charge always means a leak, which reduces cooling capacity and efficiency and can freeze the evaporator coil.

Why it matters to you

Salt air and humidity accelerate coil corrosion near the coast, a common source of slow leaks in Lowcountry systems. A system that needs a recharge every summer is leaking, and topping off without a repair keeps costing you.

Practical guidance

Warning signs include warm air from running vents, ice on the refrigerant lines, a hissing sound, and long runtimes. Ask a licensed technician to locate and repair the leak before recharging, and never attempt to open or refill the refrigerant circuit yourself.
