What is Line Set?

A line set is the pair of copper refrigerant tubes connecting an outdoor condenser or heat pump to the indoor coil or mini-split head. The larger, insulated suction line returns cool refrigerant vapor to the compressor; the smaller liquid line carries refrigerant indoors. Correct diameter, length, insulation, and leak-tight connections are essential for efficiency and capacity.

Why it matters to you

In the Lowcountry, line sets often run through humid crawlspaces and along sun-baked exterior walls, where cracked or missing insulation causes sweating, lost capacity, and water damage. Salt air and UV also degrade exposed insulation and connections faster near the water.

Practical guidance

Look at the exposed line set by your outdoor unit once a season; if the insulation is cracked, missing, or dripping, ask a licensed technician to replace it. When replacing equipment, have the installer confirm whether the existing line set is the right size and condition for the new refrigerant, or whether it should be replaced.
