Air Quality & Ductwork

What is Relative Humidity & Dew Point?

Relative humidity is the amount of water vapor in air expressed as a percentage of the maximum that air can hold at its current temperature. Dew point is the temperature at which that air becomes saturated and moisture condenses. Dew point measures absolute moisture, while relative humidity changes whenever the air warms or cools.

Why it matters to you

Charleston summer dew points often sit in the 70s, so any surface cooler than that — a duct in a crawlspace, a supply register, a cold window — can sweat and grow mold. The EPA advises keeping indoor relative humidity below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent, to limit mold growth.

Practical guidance

Keep a hygrometer in your main living area and watch the trend, not a single reading. Sweating ducts, damp floors, or musty closets mean moisture is winning; ask for an inspection that checks system sizing, duct insulation, and crawlspace moisture.
