Air Quality & Ductwork

What is Whole-House Dehumidifier?

A whole-house dehumidifier is a ducted appliance connected to a home's HVAC system that removes moisture from all the air the system circulates, independently of cooling. Controlled by its own humidistat, it holds indoor humidity at a set target, drains automatically through a condensate line, and treats every connected room rather than one space.

Why it matters to you

In Charleston's spring and fall, the air is muggy but mild, so the AC barely runs and removes little moisture — that shoulder-season stickiness is exactly what a whole-house dehumidifier handles. Controlling it protects wood floors, trim, and closets from mildew without overcooling the house.

Practical guidance

Track indoor humidity with an inexpensive hygrometer for a few weeks before buying anything. If readings stay high despite a correctly sized, well-maintained AC and sealed return ducts, ask for a humidity assessment to see whether dedicated dehumidification is the right fix.
