The scale you can see on a showerhead is also forming where you cannot see it: inside water heaters, on heating elements, in tankless heat exchangers, and through appliance valves. Hardness quietly shortens equipment life across the house.
Water heaters bear the most: sediment and scale insulate heating surfaces, stretching run times and energy use while accelerating wear.
Measure before you buy anything
Hardness is measurable, and treatment should match the number — not a sales pitch. A proper test tells you whether you need softening, filtration, or nothing at all.
Municipal supplies and wells differ meaningfully across our service area, so a neighbor's experience two towns over is not your answer.
What treatment looks like
Softeners exchange hardness minerals and protect everything downstream; whole-home filtration targets taste, odor, and sediment. Some homes want both, many need only one, and sizing matters as much as type.
