Plumbing & Water Heating

What is Sediment Flush?

A sediment flush is routine water heater maintenance that drains water from the tank's bottom drain valve to remove settled minerals and debris. Sediment insulates the burner or heating element from the water, lengthening heating cycles, raising energy use, causing rumbling noises, and accelerating tank wear, so annual flushing helps a tank last longer.

Why it matters to you

Local water chemistry and sediment load make flushing genuinely valuable in the Lowcountry rather than a nice-to-have, especially for homes on wells or with noticeable hardness.

Practical guidance

Plan on flushing a tank water heater about once a year, and treat a rumbling or popping tank as a sign it is overdue. An old drain valve that has never been opened can stick or leak, so a technician's flush is the safer first time.
