Plumbing & Water Heating

What is Hard Water & Water Softener?

Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium that leave scale on fixtures, glassware, heating elements, and inside water heaters. A water softener removes those minerals through ion exchange, swapping them for sodium or potassium as water passes through a resin bed. Hardness is measured in grains per gallon, and testing determines whether softening is needed.

Why it matters to you

Municipal supplies and wells differ meaningfully across the Charleston area, and the scale you see on a showerhead is also forming inside your water heater and tankless heat exchanger, shortening their lives.

Practical guidance

Test your water before buying any treatment, then size the system to the number the test shows. Softening protects equipment from scale; whole-home filtration addresses taste, odor, and sediment, and some homes need only one.
