Air Quality & Ductwork

What is Static Pressure?

Static pressure is the resistance to airflow that a duct system, filter, and coil place on an HVAC blower, measured in inches of water column. Technicians read total external static pressure with a manometer and compare it to the equipment's rated limit. High static pressure means restricted airflow, lower capacity, noisy registers, and extra wear on the blower motor.

Why it matters to you

Undersized returns, crushed flex duct, dirty coils, and overly dense filters are common in older Charleston homes and all raise static pressure. The result is weak airflow upstairs, poorer dehumidification, and a system that works harder through a long cooling season.

Practical guidance

If registers whistle, airflow feels weak, or the system struggles after you switched to a denser filter, ask the technician to measure static pressure. Fixes range from a different filter to adding return capacity or correcting restrictive duct runs.
