The physics: stack effect and attic heat
Warm air is lighter than cool air, so it drifts upward through stairwells and open floor plans and collects on the second floor. Engineers call this the stack effect, and it works against you all summer. The cool air your system produces tends to pool downstairs while the warmest air in the house settles exactly where your bedrooms are.
The second force is the attic. On a July afternoon in Charleston, an attic can be dramatically hotter than the outdoor air, and that heat radiates down through the ceiling into upstairs rooms all evening. Even after sunset, a heat-soaked attic keeps loading the second floor while the first floor has already recovered.
Humidity compounds both problems. Muggy air feels warmer than dry air at the same temperature, so an upstairs that is only a few degrees warmer on the thermostat can feel far more uncomfortable than the number suggests.
Why duct design is usually part of the story
Many Lowcountry homes were built with a single air handler and a duct system sized for the whole house as one zone. Ducts serving the second floor are typically longer, have more bends, and often run through the hot attic itself, so the air arriving upstairs is both weaker in flow and warmer than the air delivered downstairs.
Leaky or poorly insulated attic ductwork makes it worse. Every gap in a supply duct running through a 130-degree attic bleeds away cooling before it ever reaches the register. If your upstairs registers blow noticeably softer than the ones downstairs, duct restriction or leakage is a likely culprit.
A proper diagnosis starts with measuring airflow room by room rather than guessing. Sometimes the fix is as simple as sealing and re-balancing the existing ducts; sometimes the duct runs were never adequate for the load and need to be corrected.
Fixes that actually work, from simplest to most involved
Start with the low-cost steps: keep upstairs supply registers fully open, partially close a few first-floor registers to push more air up, run the system fan in the on position during the hottest hours to keep air mixing, and make sure the filter is clean so the blower is not fighting resistance.
If that is not enough, the next tier is professional work on the distribution side — sealing attic ducts, adding insulation over them, correcting undersized runs, and balancing dampers so the second floor gets its fair share of airflow.
For homes where one system simply cannot serve two very different floors, zoning divides the ductwork with motorized dampers and gives each floor its own thermostat. It lets a single system prioritize whichever floor is calling, which usually means the upstairs finally cools down at bedtime.
- Open all upstairs registers and check for furniture or rugs blocking returns
- Replace or clean the filter so airflow is not restricted
- Run the fan continuously during peak afternoon heat to mix air between floors
- Have attic ductwork inspected for leaks, crushed runs, and missing insulation
- Ask about zoning if one thermostat is trying to serve two very different floors
The FROG problem — and the mini-split answer
Charleston is full of FROGs — finished rooms over the garage — and they are the hardest rooms in the house to condition. A FROG sits above an unconditioned garage, is surrounded by attic space on several sides, and is usually at the very end of the duct run. It gets heat from below, above, and the sides, and the weakest airflow in the house.
For a chronically hot FROG or bonus room, a dedicated ductless mini-split is often the cleanest solution. It conditions that one room independently, with no ductwork to lose cooling in the attic, and it stops the rest of the house from being overcooled just to make one room livable.
