Plumbing & Water Heating

What is Sump Pump?

A sump pump is an electric pump set in a pit, called a sump basin, at the lowest point of a crawlspace or basement. When groundwater or storm water fills the pit, a float switch starts the pump, which discharges the water through a pipe and check valve to a safe drainage point away from the foundation.

Why it matters to you

On the Lowcountry's high-water-table, flood-prone ground, a sump keeps bulk water out of the crawlspace — and since storms that bring the most water also knock out power, a pump without backup can quit when it's needed most.

Practical guidance

Test the pump before hurricane season by pouring water into the pit and confirming it starts and drains. Keep the discharge line clear and pointed away from the house, and ask about battery backup if your crawlspace takes on water during storms.
