Lowcountry Home & Climate

What is Hurricane Prep (HVAC & Plumbing)?

Hurricane prep for HVAC and plumbing is the set of steps that protect mechanical systems from wind-blown debris, power surges, and flooding during the Atlantic hurricane season, June 1 through November 30. It includes pre-cooling the house, shutting equipment off at the disconnect, clearing loose objects, surge protection, and inspecting before restarting.

Why it matters to you

Restoration after an outage brings repeated surges that can kill compressors and control boards, and equipment that has been submerged generally cannot be trusted again — so what you do before and after a Lowcountry storm decides what survives it.

Practical guidance

Don't wrap the outdoor unit in a tarp; secure nearby objects and photograph your equipment for insurance instead. After the storm, leave any HVAC equipment or water heater that took on water off until a licensed technician inspects it, and wait for stable power before restarting.
