Why lifespan numbers are ranges, not promises
Every lifespan figure you see is a statistical middle, not a warranty. Two identical systems installed the same week can retire a decade apart depending on installation quality, maintenance history, run hours, and environment. The ranges below are the commonly cited industry figures, and they are genuinely useful for planning — as long as you treat them as planning numbers.
Run hours matter enormously, and Charleston racks them up. A system here cools hard from April into October and dehumidifies shoulder seasons on top of that, so a ten-year-old Lowcountry air conditioner has often worked as many hours as a fifteen-year-old unit somewhere milder.
Installation quality is the other silent variable. A correctly sized, properly charged, well-ducted system starts its life without the chronic stresses that quietly consume compressors and heat exchangers on sloppy installs.
Central air conditioners and heat pumps
Central ACs are commonly cited at roughly 10 to 15 years, and heat pumps in a similar range — sometimes a touch shorter inland because they run year-round for both heating and cooling. In our climate the distinction narrows, since Charleston air conditioners work nearly year-round anyway.
The component that usually decides the end is the compressor, with the outdoor coil close behind. Both live outside in our salt-tinged, humid air, which is why coastal placement, coil coatings, and simple habits like periodic fresh-water rinses genuinely matter here. The practical planning advice: once a coastal AC or heat pump passes about ten years, start weighing major repairs against replacement rather than reflexively repairing. A compressor failure on a twelve-year-old system is usually the system telling you its era is over.
Gas furnaces
Gas furnaces are commonly cited at 15 to 20 years, and they often achieve it — partly because the furnace itself works so little in a Charleston winter. A furnace here may run a fraction of the hours its northern twin does, which is kind to burners, ignitors, and blower motors.
The component that defines a furnace's true end of life is the heat exchanger. Once a heat exchanger cracks, replacement of the furnace is almost always the answer, because a cracked exchanger can allow combustion gases including carbon monoxide into the airstream. This is not a repair-versus-replace judgment call; it is a safety line.
Humidity is the coastal caveat even for furnaces. A furnace sitting idle through nine humid months in a crawl space or garage can corrode from the outside in, which is why our light heating season does not automatically translate into maximum furnace life.
Ductless mini-splits and the coastal caveat
Ductless mini-splits are often cited toward the longer end of cooling equipment lifespans, with well-maintained systems commonly reaching 15 years or more. Their inverter-driven compressors avoid the hard start-stop cycling that wears conventional equipment, and having no ductwork removes a whole category of losses and failures.
The coastal caveat applies to every equipment type, and it is worth stating plainly: within a few miles of salt water, expect the low end of any published range unless the equipment was chosen and placed with the coast in mind. Salt accelerates corrosion on outdoor coils, cabinets, and electrical connections, and it does not care what the brochure said.
Water heaters, for comparison, are commonly cited around 8 to 12 years for tank models — worth tracking on the same planning calendar, since they share the coastal corrosion problem and fail more disruptively than most HVAC equipment.

What actually moves you to the high end of the range
